Viterbo is a town and a province of 67.273 people in the northern Lazio, or High Lazio. The town has ancient origins and it has a vast medieval old town surronded by walls and enclosed by modern districts.

In the West part of the town you can find the thermal and archaeological zones (Castel d’Asso necropolis, the source of Bullicame). Viterbo is historically konwn as the town of the Popes: during the XIII century the town has been papal center and for about 24 years the Papal Palace hosted the Popes and it was also used as a meeting point to elect them. In 1962 Viterbo has been awarded the silver medal for civil valor for the countless deaths and serious damages reported following the allied bombings (1943-1944). The town is known for the transportation of Santa Rosa machine, traditional and spectacular event that takes place every year the evening of September 3rd in honor of the patron saint: a 100 feet enlightment structure by the weight of 52 quintalis carried by one hundred men on their shoulders, called Santa Rosa’s Porters, among the dark streets of the town. In 2013 the machine has been included by the UNESCO in the Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

Monuments. The center of Viterbo offers numerous and important works of art. The most famous monument is the Papal Palace, built between 1255 and 1266 in San Lorenzo’s hill, to protect the pontiff, with the famous loggia formed by seven arches in one side only, supported by slender twin columns that intertwine to form an elegant trabeation. By the loggia you have access to the great hall of the Conclave, which was the place where the election of pope Gregorio X took place. Next to the Papal Palace there is the Duomo di San Lorenzo (Cathedral of Saint Lorenzo) which was built in Romanesque style during the XII century. In the same place was located a little eighth-century Church designed especially for Saint Lorenzo, which was built in turn on a pagan temple dedicated to Hercules, but the facade dates back only in 1570, when it was rebuilt in Renaissance style. Immediately after the Cathedral square, there is the old quartiere medievale di San Pellegrino (medieval district of Saint Pellegrino), where there are numerous houses with the profferlo, the typical stair in Viterbo. Piazza del Plebiscito (Square of the Plebiscito), better known as “Piazza del Comune” (town square), where there are the Municipality and the Prefecture. At the end of the Corso Italia (simply called Corso),on top of the slope that starts from Piazza Verdi, there is Santa Rosa’s Church, in honor of the patron saint of the town, in which the body of the saint is venerated. The Church is built in a little hill next to the so called House of Santa Rosa. In the hamlet of Bagnaia there is Villa Lante, that is famous for its italian garden that is assigned to Vignola.

In the hamlet of San Martino al Cimino, with a city planning architecture made in the first half of the six tundre by the will of Lady Olympia Maidalchini, one of the most powerfull women of her time, who called a group of prestigious architects among which Borromini for an extremely innovative project about terraced houses, as part of a beautiful village under construction profile.

In Civic Museum you can admire the famous Pietà di Sebastiano del Piombo (Pity of Sebastiano del Piombo), large table that the Venetian master created between 1516 and 1517.

Fountain of Pianoscarano, called “del Piano”, which has been located in the place of the one destroyed in 1367 by command of Pope Urbano V, returning from Avignon. One day, one of the french Carcassona’s cardinal servants, decided to wash his dog in the water of the mountain and he has been bevile by a woman from Viterbo and some french servants, because he was using potable water from the district, but the Pianoscarano inhabitants rushed in his defense. Subsequently the woman has been killed. this unleashed a furious fight between Viterbo people on one side, and Papal’s Court servants and gendarmes on the other. The mad population attaked the Cardinals houses, offending them and ravaging their inhabitation. To rescue the pontiff, rushed reinforcements from neighboring countries; Viterbo was forced tu sue for peace. As a ponishment, the Pope condemned was ten rebels to the hanging, sent to prison fifty inhabitants from Viterbo, destroyed the houses of the revolt leaders, demolished the town towers to the height of the roofs and the original mountain was rased. The current fountain was built in the place of the old one in 1376. This fountain rises in the middle of the district and it has always been a gathering place for the residents of Pianoscarano.

During the grapes harvest, vintners were washing their barrels in the mountain, crowding themselves in the square. Later on, the Municipality was compeld forced to decide the turn to use the water due to the frequent quarrels. So it was assigned according to the time taken to roll the cask on its uphill road which connects the slope to the fountain. Today again this custom is passed by in the Festival of the Barrels which is held at the end of september inside the event Grape Festival. The festival is divided into two categories: the push and the shoulder. In the first one, the barrel is made to roll along the path of ascent, in the second one the competitor carries the barrel on shoulder. During the last day of the festival, by the spouts of the fountain, instead of water, it pourses wine.
